The auto-response text email I just received is a masterpiece of writing and a sign of our fast times in today’s world. Here it is below:

* ERI = E-mail Responsiveness Index. Life is all about expectation management. If you send me an e-mail that requires a response, your expectations should be set based on my in/out of office condition, my workload or my general willingness to respond – on a given day. As such, I have created the ERI and will update it on a daily basis. Here is the explanation of the Index:

ERI Level 1: I will respond within 12 – 24 Hours
ERI Level 2: I will respond within 6 – 11 Hours
ERI Level 3: I will respond within 1-5 hours
ERI Level 4: I will respond in less than 1 Hour
ERI Level 5: At this level, you should strongly advise me to use Instant Messaging or to stop running my life in response to e-mail’s I receive.
