Over the past couple years, I’ve gotten more and more involved in the Software Association of Oregon (SAO), but never have I had as much fun on the golf course with my foursome sponsored and led by the local accounting powerhouse firm, Perkins & Company. With over 100 software professionals and 30+ SAO volunteers at The Reserve golf course on the outskirts of Aloha, Oregon.

The Tourney was a scramble and I had to contend with incessant smack-talking from the uber-outgoing, affable Dave Sullivan in my foursome. Somehow, thru all that smack-talking, I raised my game (not hard to do when one is as bad of a golfer as I am). Four holes into the match, Sullivan drilled a 75 yarder into the cup for an eagle. The foursome of Sullivan, David Uslan, John Hayden, and I celebrated on the green with a few chest bumps (yes, old men try to act younger with a few beers in them).

A few holes before the end of our play, the golf gods were kind to me. A perennial wicked slicer, I actually hit my drive 270 yards straight down the fairway to about 15 feet on the fringe of the green. As luck would have it, I chose my putter instead of the predictable Pitching Wedge and nailed a 45 foot putt for eagle (first in my life). Ridiculous.

What does this blog post have to do with anything relevant to eROI or the interactive communty? Nothing, other than to say that the Portland software community and SAO in particular is not only alive but thriving. SAO President Matt Nees starts in his role this Monday and we’re back in the saddle again.

This year’s theme for our company appreciation party was put to a vote. After the votes were tallied the theme was shrouded in mystery until a team email was sent with the reveal in true eROI Rock star fashion. This year it was fated to be… Summer White Party! Using our new eROI Event system we created a totally themed event that the email linked to. Check out the process for creating The eROI Summer White Party.

The finished product, see how it was done below.

The first thing you see when you log in is the dashboard. To create an event you click the “create and event” button on the left hand side.

It will prompt you to put in some basic information about your event. The event description even supports html!

Next you create tickets, registration dates and the event schedule.

After you input everything into the fields your event will look like something like this. You will still have the options to edit or delete anything that has been created. You can have more than one ticket set up for each event too.

Once all the info is entered for the event it is time to customize. All the customization fields are in the “Customize” tab.

The customized ticket fields can capture important information like name and email or they can be fun, in this case “What Bling are you Bringing?”

This is where it gets really cool. The Theme Editor let’s you truly make the event look like your own. You can change the header, footer or entire style sheet. You have to know some html and css but with a basic knowledge you can do great things.

And like the icing on the cake, the email receipt had to be custom too. There is html and plain text options and you are able to change both.

All that’s left is to publish and enjoy your new event!

Registration Page

Number of tickets

Ticket information with custom fields

Payment information

The thank you page

And like I said it wouldn’t be complete without the thank you email.

The Portland Creative Community took some bold steps with its launch of the Portland Ad Federation Rosey Awards website themed “Nothing Says I’m Better than you Like a Rosey.” The messaging has an East Coast directness to it that takes many Portlanders by surprise in a city that fosters friendliness to strangers, foes, and friends. However, I think it’s the perfect time for Portland to step up and talk with confidence about its creative talent here. Yes, we’ve recently been discovered by the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, and other publications as the destination for hipsters (employed and unemployed) to hang out. But, we aren’t getting much positive press for having the second highest unemployment in the country. Now is the right time to shout from the roof-tops that Portland creative agencies do kick-ass work! Kudos to Anthill Marketing for the concept, design, and messaging in the site and entire Roseys this year!

2009 PAF Rosey Awards site

I’m not so sure this site would work in most other industries as it is definitely edgy, controversial, and provocative, but I think it’s a shot in the arm that Portland needs. The true test is to see if agencies from other cities take notice. Then, an interesting dialog will begin.

You’ll start to see this campaign promoted more on Twitter (I love the “Rosey Smack Feed” section of the ‘Win Tix’ part of the site), Facebook, and other blogs in the upcoming months. I’ve got to sign off from this blog post to think of some good Smack Talk myself – submit your own here >>

My two fellow eROI NYC folks, Chris Masagatani and Kavita Makadia, joined me in attending the June 1 Ignite NYC event just a block from Chris’s apartment in Midtown. I had been to an Ignite event in Washington DC which was pretty good, but a little stiff and serious, so my expectations were moderate before going to the event. At this NYC event, I was blown away by how creative, funny, and polished each of the 5-minute presentations were. I highly highly recommend you watch the video below of the brilliantly funny Baratunde Shares of The Onion.

Here is my Twitter stream from Ignite NYC in reverse order (most recent to oldest posts):
# Kickstarter.com seems really cool as crowd-funding concept. Like kiva.com for the usa. #nyc4

# @ignitenyc vibe is awesome – crowd is into it and super supportive. All presentations except one have been solid

# Oh: “the greatest trick the devil ever invented was convincing the world he didn’t exist. I wrote him back, baby!” #nyc4

# @the_swine_flu hilarious @theonion. Brilliant!

# Charitini a very cool concept #nyc4

# Online dating pres of 16.1 million profiles and made a census by congressional district. Amazing.

# Dollhouse earth part 1, 2, 3 – love the disconnectef thoughts all coming together at the end #nyc4

# Overview effect for man on the moon – altered consciousness #nyc4

# Unicef built rapidsms to facilitate sms and problem solving for malnutrition in africa #nyc4

# Beautifully done @cstoller

# First presenter is from organic. Study kindle page like rock layers. I will show u mine if u show me yours. Money. Hilarious #nyc4

# @ignitenyc kicks off with a really positive vibe. I think it might beat out wash dc, but tough to beat pdx. #nyc4

OK, I love these YouTube Ignite NYC IV videos so much I had to show more – check ‘em out below:
